What Is On-Cycle Recruiting? The PE Timeline for the 2027 and 2028 Classes

Last updated Oct 2026.

"On-cycle" is the name for the compressed, headhunter-run process that large private equity firms use to hire pre-MBA associates, mostly from investment banking analyst classes, for jobs that start a year or more later. If you are a first- or second-year analyst (or a consultant at a top firm) and someone mentions "the cycle," this is what they mean. Below: how it works step by step, who it is really for, and what has happened to the timing for the 2027 and 2028 associate classes. For the dated event log, see the on-cycle timeline.

On-cycle recruiting in one paragraph

Headhunters retained by the large funds contact analysts, collect resumes, and hold screening meetings. Then, usually with very little warning, one large firm starts interviewing and the rest follow within hours. Candidates go through fit interviews, deal discussions and a modeling test, often in a single day, and offers can come the same day. Mergers & Inquisitions describes the usual offer window as about 24 hours before it expires. The jobs themselves typically start after the analyst program ends, so you are signing for a role well over a year away.

How the process works, step by step

  1. Headhunter outreach. Recruiters email analysts in the groups and banks they target, ask for a resume and a "data sheet" of preferences, and set up intro meetings. M&I lists this sequence (intro emails, data sheets, initial meetings, pre-interview events), and Transacted notes outreach can begin almost as soon as new analysts start.
  2. Intro meetings. Short meetings that work as first-round interviews: your story, why PE, your deals and exactly what kind of fund you want. Headhunters rank candidates after these. Our guide on how PE headhunters work covers how to handle them.
  3. Kickoff. One firm decides to go and the others follow. In the January 2026 restart, candidates got emails late on Sunday, Jan 4, inviting them to meetings the next morning, according to Business Insider; Private Equity Wire reported that analysts were notified Sunday evening by firms and headhunters to attend in-person interviews on Monday.
  4. Interview day. Expect several short interviews, deal walk-throughs and a timed modeling test. In January 2026, interviews "included technical assessments, modelling tests, and behavioural interviews" (Private Equity Wire), and some candidates spent most of the day inside one firm's office (Business Insider).
  5. Offer. Offers can be extended the same day. Business Insider reported a candidate who was asked to sign before leaving the building.

If you have never done a quick returns calculation by hand, start with our paper LBO example; it is the most common short technical screen.

Who on-cycle is for

On-cycle is narrow. Transacted says candidates are essentially required to be investment banking or PE analysts, "with some room for top management consultants." M&I says on-cycle is mostly relevant if you are in the U.S., working in banking at a large firm, and want to move to a large PE firm; in most other cases, including most recruiting outside the U.S., the process is off-cycle. The firms running it are mainly mega-funds and upper-middle-market funds, while middle-market and smaller firms lean on slower processes (more on that in our off-cycle recruiting guide).

Consultants: it is possible, but the path is different. See consulting to private equity.

Why it keeps moving earlier (and then later)

The "cycle" has never had a fixed date. Business Insider reported that over roughly five years the start shifted from October to June or July, often right as new analysts were starting. Banking Dive described firms moving their process into the window between college graduation in May and the July start of bank training. Private Equity Wire noted that firms traditionally hired candidates with at least a year of banking experience, but competition had pushed some to recruit analysts up to two years before start dates.

That drift triggered a reaction. In June 2025, JPMorgan told incoming analysts they would be fired if they accepted future-dated offers before joining or within their first 18 months, and Apollo (June 11) and General Atlantic (June 12) said they would not interview or extend offers for the 2027 class that year (Banking Dive).

What happened to the 2027 class

The 2027 class's summer 2025 cycle stalled and then restarted in early January 2026. Most interviews took place on January 5, some extending into the next day, and Blackstone, Apollo, KKR and Thoma Bravo were among more than a dozen firms that interviewed and made offers (Business Insider). Private Equity Wire, citing the Financial Times, listed Blackstone, Apollo, Carlyle, TPG, Silver Lake, General Atlantic, Hellman & Friedman and Warburg Pincus among firms that held interviews.

One useful data point if you think missing on-cycle is fatal: an Apollo spokesperson told Business Insider the firm generally fills less than 50% of its associate class through on-cycle recruiting (source).

What we know about the 2028 class

Our read (opinion, not reporting): if Apollo's approach spreads, the 2028 cycle looks more like the January 2026 restart (later and still compressed) than the June 2024 one. If it doesn't, other firms could still move first. Either way, being "ready at any time" is the safe plan.

FAQ

What is on-cycle recruiting in private equity?

A compressed, headhunter-run process in which large PE firms interview and make offers to investment banking analysts (and some consultants) for associate jobs that start a year or more later, usually over a few days.

When will on-cycle start for the 2028 class?

Nobody has announced a date. Apollo said on Oct 15, 2026 that it will not run on-cycle for the 2028 class in calendar 2026; as of our last update we had not seen another firm publicly announce a pause.

How long do you get to accept an on-cycle offer?

Often very little time. Mergers & Inquisitions describes about 24 hours as usual, and some candidates in January 2026 were reportedly asked to sign on the spot.

Is it over if I miss on-cycle?

No. Off-cycle and later rounds exist, and an Apollo spokesperson said the firm generally fills less than half of its associate class through on-cycle.

Do consultants take part in on-cycle?

Some top-firm consultants do, but most consultants recruit off-cycle. See our consulting-to-PE guide.
